Ambassador of Flavors Presents: Double Z Bar & Grill – Food Review

For my biker bar review this week, I went down to Double Z Bar and Grill.  It’s a neighborhood sports bar not too far from Interstate 380 and First Avenue in Cedar Rapids.  They have an indoor putting green right alongside all the tables, so you can practice a little golf while you have a few drinks.

This place is owned by the same guy that owned Jimmy Z’s bar downtown, and both bars serve the Jimmy Z’s “Big as Your Face” tenderloin.  I have had this particular variety of tenderloin before at Jimmy Z’s bar, so I decided that would be a good pick to show bikers what kind of food the Double Z Bar and Grill has to offer.

The Tenderloin

This tenderloin is not too thick, and not too thin.  I have heard people complain about tenderloins being all breading and no meat, and this one does not fit that description at all.  It definitely has plenty of meat, and there’s always a lot left over when I trim it down to fit inside the bun.  It’s breaded with panko bread crumbs and flavored with ranch seasoning.  These tenderloins are also marinated to make sure they are full of flavor.

The Mac & Cheese Bites

If tenderloins aren’t your thing, they also have a fairly standard selection of bar appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, wings, and thin-crust pizza.  I got the mac and cheese bites for an appetizer.  They are one of my favorite bar appetizers, and they are not too easy to find.  The fries here are also really good, and I always get some queso dip to make them even better.

The Sides and Specials

If you are lucky enough to come during the week, they have daily lunch specials.  The lunch specials are home cooking at its finest in this area.  I tried the beef noodles a few weeks ago, and I was sitting there thinking I was eating the best instant mashed potatoes I ever had.  It didn’t take me long to figure out that they weren’t instant at all.  Double Z actually serves real mashed potatoes with their beef and noodles, and they were most definitely some of the best around.

I would suggest going to the Double Z Bar and Grill Facebook page to check out what’s happening.  That’s where they advertise their home-cooked lunch specials with pictures.  With summer fast approaching, it’s very likely that there will be some fun events planned at Double Z, and those events will be announced on their Facebook page as well.
