Ambassador of Flavors Presents: Chrome Horse Saloon- Food Review

I learned pretty fast, after I moved up here from the South, to be very cautious about food.  Since I was so gun shy from a few bad experiences at other places, I always got very basic food when I went to Chrome Horse in the past, and I never really explored their menu beyond the simple burger and chicken strips.

For this review, I let the chef decide on what I would try, so I would be forced to get something that I wouldn’t normally pick on my own.  I went early in the morning to avoid the crowds, and they were still serving Saturday brunch.  I ended up getting the Sick Chick sandwich and a brunch burger.

“The chicken sandwich was my absolute favorite.  It is hands down the best chicken sandwich I have found in this area.”

– Will Carter, The Ambassador of Flavors on the Sick Chick Sandwich at The Chrome Horse in Cedar Rapids, Ia

The Brunch Burger

The meat for their burgers is mixed in-house, and the seasoning is put into the mix before they are cooked.  They use an 81/19 beef mix, and it ended up being very juicy and full of flavor.  This brunch burger was made with RumChata French toast, a fried egg, bacon, and cheese.  It also comes with pancake syrup for dipping.  After fully evaluating how the meat on this burger was prepared and how it tastes, I would feel very confident endorsing any of their burgers.

The Sick Chick Sandwich

The chicken sandwich was my absolute favorite. It is hands down the best chicken sandwich I have found in this area. I never ordered one before, because I assumed it would be a frozen piece of grilled chicken from Sysco.  I learned today that most of their food is made in-house, and all their sauces are made from scratch.  This grilled chicken was very much like blackened Cajun chicken, with all the necessary Cajun spices to make it delicious.  It had something like a remoulade sauce on the meat as well as some bacon and cheese.  For those of you who like to get creative with pizza toppings, that same chicken sandwich is available in the form of a pizza.

(Pulled) Pork & Beans

The baked beans were absolutely delicious.  They are made from scratch and have pulled pork, bacon, and brisket mixed in.  I tried a sample of the pulled pork by itself, and it was immediately obvious that their pulled pork is on par with any pulled pork I ever found down South, and I wanted everybody to know that it exists.  I am always looking for a pulled pork sandwich, so I jumped at the chance to see if this was any good. Normally this would be in a sandwich, with the sauce poured on top, but I just got a little bit of meat by itself to try. I would have never even thought to try pulled pork from here, but it’s pretty amazing.  It’s very juicy, very flavorful, full of smoke, and it almost melts in your mouth it’s so tender.  It’s smoked in hickory and applewood.  The sauce isn’t too shabby either.  If you have been looking for quality pulled pork, you definitely want to put this on your list to try out.

Chrome Horse is known around town for being one of the best local music venues. The stage is moved inside during the winter, but in the warmer months, the outdoor stage and patio are open and normally very active. You can tell by the décor and designated bike parking, that this place was designed with bikers in mind.

Private Party? No Problem.

There is a private room available for parties of 30 or more at no additional charge.  They also have a good selection of local craft beer for you to enjoy.

A note from Will Carter, The Ambassador of Flavors:

“This is one of many biker bar reviews I will be doing on a weekly basis.  The goal is to promote local bars as destinations for motorcycle enthusiasts.  These reviews will be part of an online resource created to help bikers find bars with good food and entertainment.”
