I woke up this morning extremely bored, and I started looking for something to do. Within a couple of hours, all my ideas had failed me. The places I thought I might want to go were closed, and I just couldn’t think of anything that I really wanted to do.
Red Knights to the Rescue
Out of desperation, I turned to the Red Knights Motorcycle Club stamp book to see what places might provide me with some Sunday entertainment. When Keith (President of RKMC) gave me the stamp book, he included a printed list of all the places with some personalized notes.
About three-quarters of the way down the list, highlighted in pink, was Poopy’s Pub in Savannah, Illinois. Right beside it was written “Good food – destination location”. That’s about all the information I had, so I looked it up on Google and found enough pictures to convince myself to drive all the way from Cedar Rapids to Savannah.
If you’ve been following me for a while you may have figured out, I’m not from here. I also haven’t owned a Harley in a few years now, so places like Poopy’s just aren’t as familiar to me as they might be to some of you.
“Today was literally the first time I had ever heard of Poopy’s Pub.” – Will Carter, The Ambassador of Flavors
As of today, I have experienced Poopy’s in all its glory, and I understand now why it is so popular. Out of all the places I have reviewed, on my personal Facebook page as well as the Biker Lawyers page, Poopy’s is now my favorite.
Savory Southern Meal
Let’s talk about the food for a minute. I had to get an order of chicken strips because fresh chicken strips are nearly impossible to find around where I live. I also got what they like to call creamy chicken and biscuits. Why did I get this? I got it because normally bars just don’t have this kind of thing and I wanted to see how good it could possibly be.
Creamy chicken & biscuits
The creamy chicken and biscuits dish was one of the most Southern-like things I have had from a bar or restaurant up North. I have never seen this exact dish down South, and I don’t think any Southern dish has biscuits like this covered in a chicken gravy. However, the general concept and flavor was a lot like something we would eat in the South, and it reminded me a lot of chicken pot pie with biscuits as a substitute for the pie crust.
I was thrilled to have this type of food as an option because usually, it isn’t available.
I was equally thrilled to be at a place where nobody was trying to feed me tenderloins and cottage cheese as a substitute for real comfort food.
The “Poopy’s Experience”
After I ate, I explored what I can only call the campus at Poopy’s. It was made up of a bunch of separate buildings all on the same property. This place was pretty impressive, and I told Poopy that it reminded me of Dollywood, or a little amusement park specifically designed for bikers.
The Future of Poopy’s
Not only is this a bar and restaurant, but it also has a bike repair shop and a tattoo shop. Poopy also has plans for a kayak rental business right on the river next to the bar.
I had a good talk with Poopy and was not surprised to find out that he has been involved with the biker community for a very long time. He is very supportive of various charitable causes related to bikers, and he obviously knows what bikers care about.
Mr. Poopy knows how to have fun too, and judging by the looks of this place, he is clearly a damn genius all the way around.
If you don’t believe the man behind the Poopy’s brand is a genius, just check out the little machine that gives you forks and spoons (see video).
I’ve never seen anything like it, and it might even beat those Japanese toilets with all the buttons as being the coolest thing I have ever seen.
Broadening my horizons…
While I was at Poopy’s Pub I was able to experience something completely new myself. I have learned a lot since I moved to Iowa. A lot of things up North are very different, and these cultural differences never cease to amaze me.
Where I’m from, a body shot involves a plastic shot glass or test tube. There is also no touching with hands where I’m from. Apparently, there is a version of this practice that has some significant modifications from what I am used to.
A Biker’s Body Shot
Poopy’s has what they call a pool bar, and it is exactly what it sounds like. This is where a fun variant of body shots can be observed. I didn’t get the opportunity to observe one before my friends decided to buy me one, and there was no training video, so I had to learn on the fly. With this version, you have to use your hands. I assumed it would be a full-service experience, where I didn’t have to do much to participate, but I was wrong.
At Poopy’s the object is to use your hands to create a drinking trough that will cause the liquor to flow into your mouth.
You will most likely need a napkin after this experience… and if you did your time at Poopy’s right, a hangover cure for the morning!
Food, Festivities, Fun
If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for beer, bikes, and music, Poopy’s Pub in Savanah is the place to be. From Tattoos to live tunes, I can guarantee you won’t bored while there and will leave with a full belly and a lifetime’s worth of memories.
A note from Will Carter, The Ambassador of Flavors:
“This is one of many biker bar motorcycle-friendly restaurant reviews I do on a weekly basis. The goal is to promote local bars as destinations for motorcycle enthusiasts. These reviews are part of an online resource created to help bikers find bars with good food and entertainment.”
