The Growth of a Great Food Legacy

O’s Grill is one of the newer brick-and-mortar establishments in Cedar Rapids, but O’s food has been around in some form or another since 2009.  The owner, who everybody knows simply as O, is one of the most beloved restauranteurs in this community.

He started out with nothing more than a cart, upgraded to a food truck, and now finally has a permanent location on Center Point Road.  He is now located in a shopping center that hosts some of the very best ethnic food businesses in Cedar Rapids.

Today I ordered a classic beef and lamb gyro meal along with a chicken bowl.  The meal came with fries and Baklava.  The meat on both dishes was topped with sauteed onions, sauteed tomatoes, parsley, and of course, tzatziki sauce.

The best Mediterranean-style food in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

O is not lying when he says that he serves some of the best Mediterranean-style food in Cedar Rapids.  I tried this place for the first time several months ago, and I was impressed with every bit of the food I ordered.  I think today might have been the first time I tasted his Baklava, and I was very happy with that experience as well.

One reason that O’s grill is one of my favorite places, is that I can eat the food the way it comes, without having to ask for any kind of modifications.  Most places that serve any kind of gyros always ruin them with some kind of nasty cucumber sauce.  I can’t tolerate anything that has to do with a cucumber, so standard gyros are a deal breaker for me.  Here at O’s, they have found a way to make a great sauce without using cucumbers, and I greatly appreciate having this different style of gyro to choose from.

Memorable Moroccan Meat Made Right

Another thing I really love about O’s, is that when he cuts the meat off the cone, he is done messing with it at that point.  There are a few other places that insist on throwing the already cooked meat on the grill for some additional cooking.  They always burn the edges of the meat and make damn sure that any bit of moisture or juiciness in the meat is completely evaporated before they let you have it.

Heroic Hummus

O also makes some very delicious hummus, and he serves it Moroccan style, with a little puddle of olive oil on top.  I’m always impressed with places that pay attention to the little details like this and don’t try to take shortcuts, just because it’s more convenient for them.

The Rice is Nice

Even the rice at O’s grill is delicious.  That’s because he uses a special blend of Moroccan seasonings to give it the perfect flavor to complement the rest of his food.  Literally, no aspect of the food here is neglected or considered an afterthought.

O’s Secret Ingredients: A Smile and Love

According to O, every gyro is made with a smile and love.  If you decide to visit O’s grill, chances are that you will get to meet the man himself and experience first-hand the passion and effort that he puts into his food and his business.

I met some familiar faces there tonight that some of you might remember.  The Ketchup Man decided to make a return appearance at the last minute.  When he walked through the door, it brought back childhood memories of Mr. Rogers walking through the door at the beginning of each episode of his television program.

The Ketchup Man’s friend Lucas actually got there before the rest of us did, and he brought his family along.  They have been coming to O’s for quite a while now, and they are big fans of the food.  Lucas had an adorable little boy with him who also ended up trying out some of the food at O’s Grill.

Get Social with O’s Grill

O’s Grill also does a really good job with social media.  If you are curious about the food here, just go look up O’s Grill on Facebook.  He keeps his Facebook page up to date with very high-quality pictures and videos, so that you can see what everything is about before you decide to make the drive here.
