The Party You Didn’t Know You Needed

Fool House Band- Pop… Rocks?!

“Look, I may be the rock guy, but there is something about 1990’s pop that brings me back to that simpler time where I wasn’t paying bills and taking care of my kid.”

Ned, The Biker’s Ambassador of Rock

The 4th of July has come and gone, and with all sorts of booms going on in my neighborhood, it was a miracle that my 1½-year-old daughter slept through it all. She’s like Dad though, loud noises don’t bother her, which I quickly discovered as we made it down to downtown Waterloo to check out the festivities before the big downtown fireworks lifted off for the night.

Before we went down though, I wondered what other things were going on downtown Waterloo and I was pleased to see that, in this really nice festival area that they have down there, was PLENTY going on!

Waterloo Becomes Party Central

Food trucks, drinks, and seating for fireworks, but the part I was most excited about, is that there was this band playing that I had NEVER heard of named Fool House, the ultimate ’90’s Party Band.

Now, all I had read about this band is that they did covers of popular ’90s tracks but as a rock group. So, music from my favorite decade that I grew up in was infused with rock? Yeah- I was sold. I had to see what this was all about and the bonus that I had my kid with me sweetened the deal.

We made our way down, found a parking spot, and from a distance, I could hear a rock version of TLC’s ‘Scrubs’ going on which instantly sent me into a nostalgic world of the ’90s.

Look, I may be the rock guy, but there is something about 1990s pop that brings me back to that simpler time when I wasn’t paying bills and taking care of my kid. I was just A KID in the ’90s wondering when my favorite episode of AHHH Real Monsters was gonna show up on Nickelodeon.

We made it into the festival area, popped my kid’s protective hearing headset on, and were treated to a group named Fool House performing some of the most recognizable pop hits of the ’90s but with guitars, drums, bass, and a stellar light and video show.

Fool House Band: Right in the Nostalgia!

Just when you thought Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin La Vida Loca’ needed a guitar solo? Food House was able to supply that with no problem, they were an intensely solid band!

The band was dressed up in that pure ’90s garb that I remember seeing on MTV when I was a kid as a profile photo of Uncle Jesse brandished the kick drum paying tribute to Full House of course, but also the most rippin’ band ever Jesse and the Rippers… DUH!

Tracks from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Bell Biv Devoe, and even some rock classics like Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing’ made it into their set list, it was just really fun to watch. I heard all these tunes that just brought me back to that simpler time as I mentioned before. Then it kinda hit me…when I was growing up, the ’80s was the retro-cool thing to celebrate (and still is in many ways- anyone caught Stranger Things?!), and now? It’s the ’90s!

I have OFFICIALLY BECOME RETRO!

What’s great about a band like this though, is that they take all the songs like this that you’d get teased for liking as a kid and gives them the rock edge- really reinvents them so that you aren’t afraid to say you like some of these tracks!

Or if you reach your mid 30’s (like me) and just don’t give a crap what people think, well then, there ya go.

This is a fun band, especially if you grew up in the ’90s or were a hip teenager at that time thinking about Nickelodeon GAK or Sabrina the Teenage Witch and wondering when the next Third Eye Blind album was coming out [turns out, it’s June 24, 2022, in case you were actually wondering].
