Biker killed in Hampton motorcycle accident

56-year-old Parkersburg, Iowa resident Nicholas Paul Hursh was killed in a recent motorcycle accident on Iowa Highway 3, according to the WCF Courier on July 7.

Preliminary investigation made by the Iowa State Patrol showed that Hursh was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had traversed the center line on the highway; the driver of this vehicle claimed he fell asleep while driving, resulting in the collision. The accident is still under investigation by the authorities.

Friends and family of Hursh remember him best as someone who had been through tough times and who had changed his life for the better. The former member of a motorcycle gang, Hursh struggled with drug use in the past and spent time in prison.

However, when Hursh got out, he turned his life around. He got a job and supported his family. His brother, Dan Hursch, said he last saw his brother in May and was glad to have that time with him.

Motorcyclist killed in driveway accident

Forty-three-year-old Altoona resident Kenneth Dever Chapman lost his life after the motorcycle he was operating along the 4100 block of Broadway Avenue collided with an automobile, WHO TV reported on April 14.

The accident occurred not long before 6:00 p.m. According to the Des Moines Police Department’s investigation, the driver of the car that Chapman crashed into, Erin Buechler, was attempting to pull out of her driveway to head west on Broadway Avenue. She claimed she failed to see the motorcycle headed her way and was charged by authorities with the failure to yield.

Chapman hit the rear of the driver’s side and was subsequently ejected from his motorcycle. It was reported that he was not wearing a helmet when the fatal collision happened. A Polk County deputy was the first to arrive at the scene and attempted to perform CPR on the victim. Chapman died after being transported to a hospital.

The police investigators believed that neither alcohol consumption nor speed were factors that influenced the crash.

Traffic accident fatalities in Iowa slightly higher in 2014

Iowa state officials recently reported that more people have died during vehicle accidents on state roads in 2014 than in 2013, but the fatality rates are still significantly lower than 2001 statistics.

According to a report from The Des Moines Register on December 27, 319 people perished on Iowa state and federal roads in 2014, a decrease of 28% from 2001’s 446, but a slight increase from 2013’s 317.

The assessment from the 2014 fatality reports showed that 29% of the people who lost their lives in the traffic accidents were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the incident, and 56% of the deceased victims were vehicle drivers.

Motorcycle drivers and passengers both face a greater risk of accident than people riding closed vehicles. Although the consequences of a motorcycle accident can be devastating, there are options for legal recourse for victims or victims’ families. Wrongful death civil suit continues despite charge dismissal

The civil suit filed against 23-year-old Charles City, Iowa resident Stephanie Mercer, who allegedly caused the death of 66-year-old Nora Springs local David Crowe after she struck his motorcycle in May near Nora Springs, will continue despite the dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charges against her, the WCF Courier reported on September 26.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Floyd County District Court on August 12 by Crowe’s widow 66-year-old Nancy Crowe, claims that Mercer’s negligence resulted in the wrongful death of her husband. She is seeking compensation for the loss of Crowe’s life plus an amount that will compensate her for the loss of companionship.

The criminal charges were dismissed by Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown. Mercer agreed to plead to a citation with enhanced penalties that has yet to be determined.
