Five weeks, four deadly motorcycle crashes in Linn County

Over the course of just over four weeks, there have already been four fatal accidents involving motorcyclists, all within Linn County.

The most recent accident involves Benjamin Kinkead, 36, who lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a ditch just south of Palo on the morning of Saturday, July 26. Another motorcyclist, Evan Volkers, 24, was fatally hit by a semi-trailer while going south on an exit ramp along I-380 on the morning of July 14.

These occurrences have been stunning the Cedar Rapids area, thus reinforcing local motorcyclists to drive defensively and remain visible. Cedar Rapids police has advised motorcyclists in the area to wear helmets and bright-colored clothing to increase their visibility and lessen their physical injuries, should they encounter an accident on the road. Our entire legal team at The Biker Lawyers. sends our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by these local tragedies.

New helmet-mounted brake light enhances motorcycle safety

Motorcycles are significantly smaller than other vehicles such as cars or trucks. As such, many drivers simply do not see motorcyclists on the road and end up colliding with them by mistake.

As such, motorcyclists must remain highly visible to other drivers at all times, especially at night. Thankfully, an extra brake light that mounts on motorcycle helmets is now available, making riders a bit more noticeable to others.

The Whistler WHL-80 Helmet Safety Light mounts to any helmet and wirelessly connects to a motorcycle’s wiring. Once connected, the helmet syncs up with the motorcycle’s brakes as well as left and right turn signals.

The WHL-80 safety light is sold for $100 on various websites.

Many individuals enjoy the open-air, freedom, and fuel efficiency of riding on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, far too often, riders suffer severe injuries because of the carelessness of other drivers around them. If you have been injured on a motorcycle because of another party’s recklessness or negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
