ABATE gears Iowa for motorcycle safety

ABATE, or A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, of District 15 in Iowa, stated that since the summer days are fast approaching, it is high time for motorcycle riders and the public to learn how to treat injured victims of motorcycle accidents. They stated this information is critical since wounds from these accidents can be vastly different from injuries incurred in a car crash.

On Saturday, March 19, this non-profit organization conducted seminars regarding motorcycle safety with first responders, motorcycle riders, nurses, and other individuals. Genesis emergency medical technician, Samantha Krider, suggested people attend more installments of the seminar later and motorcyclist Scott Moeller stated, “With [the] knowledge [gathered from the talk], you can keep a better head…there’s no panic involved.”

The aim of the seminar was to provide motorcycle riders with knowledge regarding handling motorcycle accidents, thereby making them more confident about their riding skills and their ability to keep themselves and friends safe.

Bicycle bill passes Senate committee

Senate Bill 2076, introduced by State Senator Matt McCoy (Democrat) in Iowa, was approved on Tuesday, February 16 by the Iowa Senate committee on transportation. The proposed law seeks to broaden an already existing law that prevents motorists from driving too close to bicycles along the highway. The new bill would expand the coverage of this safety requirement to bicycles in designated bike lanes.

According to McCoy, the bill, which is already in practice in 37 other states, is designed to protect bike riders on the road, who have as much right to be on roadways as other motorists. For his part, State Senator Tim Kapucian (Republican) said the bill only confirms current policy.

Statistics show that between the years 2005 and 2014, 53 bicyclists were killed in accidents involving cars in Iowa. Currently, motorists can be fined $250 for driving to close to a bicyclist and $100 for violating Iowa passing laws.

Our legal team at The Biker Lawyers understands exactly how dangerous motorists who fail to share the road can be. If you have suffered in an accident caused by a negligent driver, do not hesitate to call us at (877) 209-9452 today.

Ames police to conduct seminars on motor vehicle safety

Ames Police Commander Jason Tuttle has stated that after the hit-and-run accident that happened in December 2015 and caused the death of an Iowa State University student, it is high time for the city and the university to come up with strategies to keep bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists along Lincoln Way safe from vehicular accidents.

One of the city’s plans is to hold a pedestrian and traffic safety information session along Lincoln Way on Monday, January 11 at around 11:00 a.m. During the session, police officers will take up posts at each intersection from Ash Avenue to Hayward Avenue.

Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injuries from accidents on the road, and that’s why negligent drivers who do not look out for others can cause significant harm. At The Biker Lawyers, our legal team represents motorcycle drivers and passengers who have been the victims of negligent drivers or accidents.
