Forty-three-year-old Altoona resident Kenneth Dever Chapman lost his life after the motorcycle he was operating along the 4100 block of Broadway Avenue collided with an automobile, WHO TV reported on April 14.
The accident occurred not long before 6:00 p.m. According to the Des Moines Police Department’s investigation, the driver of the car that Chapman crashed into, Erin Buechler, was attempting to pull out of her driveway to head west on Broadway Avenue. She claimed she failed to see the motorcycle headed her way and was charged by authorities with the failure to yield.
Chapman hit the rear of the driver’s side and was subsequently ejected from his motorcycle. It was reported that he was not wearing a helmet when the fatal collision happened. A Polk County deputy was the first to arrive at the scene and attempted to perform CPR on the victim. Chapman died after being transported to a hospital.
The police investigators believed that neither alcohol consumption nor speed were factors that influenced the crash.
