The Ambassador of Flavors Biker Food Review: The Gypsy Highway

Photo of the entrance to The Gypsy Highway in Davenport, Iowa

I just happened to be at Gypsy Highway this weekend and saw a bunch of cool biker stuff, so I decided it would be a good idea to get some pictures and let everybody know about the place.  Gypsy Highway has some pretty interesting food for a biker bar.  Their menu is American and Thai fusion, so if you are looking for something besides plain bar food, this is the place.

The last time I was there, I got the Pad Thai.  It was so good that I wanted to get it again, so I could show off some pictures of it.  My friend who was with me on that previous trip got the Chicken Alfredo.  I was sitting there wanting it the entire time he was eating it, so I got some of that too.

The Pad Thai

Pad Thai is basically rice noodles mixed with sauce.  The flavor of the sauce can vary wildly from one place to another, so it wouldn’t be very accurate for me to say that it’s going to taste exactly like pad Thai you might have had anywhere else.  I have personally found some similar to this at other places, and this version is absolutely delicious.  Like most pad Thai, it has crushed peanuts on the side, and it’s sprinkled with bean sprouts.  You can choose whatever meat you want, but I got the chicken.

The Chicken Alfredo

The chicken alfredo here was better than some that I have found at real Italian restaurants.  I’m not a big fan of bland alfredo sauce, and the sauce at Gypsy Highway has plenty of flavor.  I also have a problem finding overcooked chicken at a lot of places.  This chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly.  It was also very tender and juicy.

You get a whole piece of boneless chicken breast that is grilled and laid on top of the noodles.  I like it better this way as opposed to mixing the chicken in with the noodles, because it does a better job preserving the flavor of the grilled chicken.

A lot of places treat the garlic bread as an afterthought, but they did a really good job picking the right bread for this dish.  It was buttered and toasted just right, and I kept wanting more after it was gone.

The Gypsy Highway: Not just Asian Food and Pasta

If you aren’t into the Asian food or the pasta, and you just want some plain old bar food, they still got you covered.  There’s no shortage of burgers on their menu, and I saw plenty of them being consumed while I was there.  Everything looked amazing, so this is definitely a destination for food.  If I lived in the area, I would be going here for dinner on a regular basis.

The Gypsy Highway is also one of the main entertainment venues in the Quad Cities.  I have seen some really good bands here, so I would recommend that you check out their live music schedule on their website or on Facebook.

A note from Will Carter, The Ambassador of Flavors:

“This is one of many biker bar reviews I will be doing on a weekly basis.  The goal is to promote local bars as destinations for motorcycle enthusiasts.  These reviews will be part of an online resource created to help bikers find bars with good food and entertainment.”
