Bicycle bill passes Senate committee

Senate Bill 2076, introduced by State Senator Matt McCoy (Democrat) in Iowa, was approved on Tuesday, February 16 by the Iowa Senate committee on transportation. The proposed law seeks to broaden an already existing law that prevents motorists from driving too close to bicycles along the highway. The new bill would expand the coverage of this safety requirement to bicycles in designated bike lanes.

According to McCoy, the bill, which is already in practice in 37 other states, is designed to protect bike riders on the road, who have as much right to be on roadways as other motorists. For his part, State Senator Tim Kapucian (Republican) said the bill only confirms current policy.

Statistics show that between the years 2005 and 2014, 53 bicyclists were killed in accidents involving cars in Iowa. Currently, motorists can be fined $250 for driving to close to a bicyclist and $100 for violating Iowa passing laws.
