The United States Department of Transportation has proposed measures that aim to install tougher rules for motorcycle helmets in a bid to crack down on the sale and manufacture of “novelty helmets,” according to Yahoo! News on May 20.
The proposal aims to specify the definition of an acceptable motorcycle helmet with standards defining thickness and compression ability. Novelty helmets are described to cover only a small part of the head, they have less than the standard thickness that regular helmets have, and do not have the necessary absorbency to withstand the impact of a crash, the department reported. Many buy them with style rather than safety in mind.
Quality helmets go a long way toward preventing deaths associated with motorcycle accidents.
